Alexi Matchavariani International Composer’s Competition

Terms of the Alexi Matchavariani’s International Composers' Competition.

  • 1) The competition is open to any composer under the age of 40 by the application deadline.
  • 2) The competition will be held online.
  • 3)Competition works should not have been published, nor published on a compact disc, shown on television, radio, Internet or performed in public.
  • 4) The date of creation of a work for the competition should not exceed two (2) years before the start of the competition, as Alexi Matchavariani’s International Composers' Competition will be held every two (2) years.
  • 5) The composition created for the competition must be submitted no later than two (2) months before the start of the competition. a) Applications for the competition will not be accepted earlier than two months before the start of the competition. b) The competition dates will be announced online on the website of the Alexi and Vakhtang Matchavariani Charity Foundation. www.matchavarianifoundation.ge c) Information about the announcement of the competition will be provided in: Georgian, English, French, German and Russian languages.
  • 6) The competition will be announced in two (2) categories: a) Chamber Music b) Symphonic music
  • 7) Requirements of the Chamber Music Competition: Authors must submit: a) Ensemble of any configuration: Up to 9 performers (including singers), duration: not less than 15 minutes. Also, vocal cycle, duration: not less than 15 minutes. b) Sheet music (scores) of the work must be provided in PDF online by the contestant. c) It is desirable for the composer to send an online audio or video recording of the work, the quality of which will be acceptable for the evaluation of the work. d) The contestant shall provide the material in PDF format in electronic format.
  • 8) In the category of chamber music, three (3) composers will be awarded. a) 1st place prize: € 2500 Euros b) 2nd place prize: € 1500 Euros c) 3rd place prize: € 500 Euros
  • 9) Category: Symphonic music. In the category of symphonic music, the composers should present: a) Orchestral work, duration: not less than 22-25 minutes long. b) Instrumental concerto, duration: not less than 20 minutes long. 2 c) Vocal cycle accompanied by an orchestra, duration: not less than 20 minutes long. d) Composition for string orchestra (it is possible to add some instruments), duration: not less than 20 minutes long. e) Symphonic Picture or Poem, duration: not less than 20 minutes long. f) The composition of the symphony orchestra should not exceed: 3 - flutes, 3 - oboes, 3 - clarinets, 3 - bassoons 4 - horns (corni), 3 - trumpets, 3 - trombones, 1 – tuba, 4 - percussionists, 1- harp, 1- celesta or piano, 40 - strings.
  • 10) The following category - Symphonic Orchestra - will have three winners: 1) 1st prize € 3000 Euros 2) 2nd prize € 2000Euros 3) 3rd prize € 1000 Euros
  • 11) After the winners in both categories are announced, an award ceremony and a concert of the winners will be held in Borjomi. Jury members will be invited to the event by the Competition Organizing Committee.
  • 12) Concerts of the winners will be held in Borjomi. During the day there will be an award ceremony for the winners in the chamber music category and a concert of their own music. In the evening, the winners of the symphony music category will be awarded and their music concert with the participation of the symphonic orchestra will take place. a) For the winners in both categories, the competition will provide soloists from Georgia, either an instrumentalist or vocalist, as well as the acapella choir. The competition will also provide as needed: ranging from the soloist, to the nonet, the Orchestra and the Conductor. b) Music scores (sheet music) for final concerts (orchestra, ensemble, sheet music for soloists, materials for acapella choir) must be provided by the contestant. The competition undertakes to print and copy the material in PDF format for the orchestra, ensemble, soloists and acapella choir through Xerox.
  • 13) As a final event of the competition, a gala concert with works by Alexi Matchavariani and Pyotr Tchaikovsky will take place;
  • 14) The competition organizing committee will be providing the winners with: a) Hotel in Tbilisi for two days and nights, as well as hotel in Borjomi for two (three) days, as necessary. b) In order to arrive in Georgia, the winners from abroad must purchase an airline ticket, and the competition will reimburse them for this ticket in the amount of € 400. c) The winners on the territory of Georgia will be provided with transportation, transfer to and from the airport, travel from Tbilisi to Borjomi and back. d) The winners of the competition will be provided with two meals a day (breakfast and dinner) both in Tbilisi and Borjomi. e) The winners will receive the prize money on the bank account submitted by them no later than 14 days after the end of the competition.
  • 15) In both categories: a) The creation of the first prize winner will be recommended in a reputable publishing house. b) Their winning composition will be published in small-circulation within one year after the competition by "Musfond Publishers" of Georgia. c) The creations of all six winners (in both categories) will be performed and broadcasted from Borjomi during the winner's concert.
